The Outer Edge

Our approach – The Edge Philosophy

John Paul’s vision for The Outer Edge is firmly rooted in his extensive training in the martial arts. Now a 7th Dan in Ninjutsu, JP has found that many of the skills, both mental and physical, developed through his training and several Japanese ways of thinking are transferable to his role as an outdoor instructor. These eclectic ideas from his experiences in martial arts and adventure sports together with his interest in teaching and learning form a fundamental part of The Outer Edge’s ethos and our approach to outdoor instruction. The aim of The Outer Edge is to incorporate these ideas in the way that we work to allow people to realise the aspirations of our strapline - learn more, achieve more, discover more.

If the spirit is in the right state then that will manifest in your movements.

We create an environment which allows you to be in the right emotional state to reach your potential (whether that is relaxed, calm, excited or fired up!) so that you can perform to your best. The way we deliver our courses and adventure experiences allows you to be relaxed or pushed at the right times, enjoy yourself and thus achieve more.

Fudoshin (“non-moving spirit”)

Fudoshin is a spirit of unshakable calm and determination. Our resolution to provide absolute excellence in outdoor instruction and an exceptional service to our clients is unyielding. Yet it is more than resolve, more than determination. It is the ability to see through what you start or an aim that drives everything that you do. We give our all to enable our clients to get what they need from their experience. This determination to achieve naturally spills over and inspires others to achieve. Allied with the importance we place on Fudoshin is the proverb – “the unbending tree is easily broken”. We have balance. We recognise the need for flexibility as resolve alone may not allow you to achieve – our approach is based on tailoring our courses and adventure experiences to give you the opportunity to shape your learning and experiences.
